Hertford is the county town of Hertfordshire, England, and is also a civil parishes in England in the East Hertfordshire district of the county. In 2006 East Hertfordshire was ranked within the top 10 places to live in the UK following a survey commissioned by the Channel 4 TV station. Forming a civil parishes in England, the 2001 census put the population of Hertford at about 24,180. Recent estimates are that it is now around 28,000. The name is Old English and means the Ford (crossing) frequented by deers or stags.
